Demographic dividend is one kind of demographic period when number of dependent population ( old people, children etc) decreases and active population increases dramatically. According to the definition of  United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) demographic dividend means, “the economic growth potential that can result from shifts in a population’s age structure, mainly when the share of the working-age population (15 to 64) is larger than the non-working-age share of the population (14 and younger, and 65 and older).”   So the working force as well as  productivity, income and savings of the nation augments, therefore, the economic progress of the country accelerates quickly. Every nation gets a chance of demographic dividend in it's lifetime. Japan, South korea and most western nations have successfully  utilized the demographic dividend, therefore, they are now economically exuberant countries.

It is a good news for our country that we stepped in demographic dividend last year. It means that a colossal potentiality is awaiting for us. Bangladesh is already a lower middle income country and according to the declaration of our government, we are supposed to achieve the status of middle-income country by 2021. Demographic dividend is a happy match in this momentous time. Exploiting demographic dividend we can even achieve the status of upper middle income country. But what we need is a proper plan. We have to transmute millions of youths into assets. Then, they can be utilized to augment domestic production as well as to earn foreign exchange exporting manpower. Thus our economy can be escalated not only into middle income country but also into upper middle income country. I request the Government to zero in on demographic dividend.
